It's been an extraordinary night for the Democrats so far in the US midterms. They have taken control of the Senate and are projected to take control of the House of Representatives too, according to the BBC's partner CBS News. The results in the Senate are beyond what the Democrats would have expected. North Carolina was a likely pick-up but South Carolina was a huge shock and Kansas had not returned a Democratic senator since 1932. Texas, Iowa, Ohio and Maine have also turned blue.
